Drug Intervention: A Delicate Approach in Treating Addiction

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

Drug addiction can hit anyone and not just ordinary teenagers. Even those who are living in the limelight can be affected as well. And part of addressing this issue is talking about different ways to fight addiction including the drug intervention.

In drug intervention, the family and friends of the addicted person would persist that he should seek the help of the experts so that he could overcome his addiction. And by knowing that these people wanted him (the addict) to change for good would make the patient help himself as well.

Unfortunately, there were some cases that the results of drug intervention are different from what they expected. While others would become more productive, there were some patients who showed more anger and even self-destruction as well. More often than not, it happens if the drug intervention is not facilitated properly. Before implementing the drug intervention it is very vital that you seek the help of someone who is well-educated with the said method and someone who already had an experience doing a drug intervention as well. Also once the intervention is done finding an alcohol treatment center is important.

If the drug intervention that you organized did not ended up so well, remember that it is not the drug addict who failed but you. Always bear in mind that like those who are in hospitals, they too are sick. They just don’t need your help but thorough treatment at the same time. Make sure that you are fully knowledgeable about drug intervention before doing it to the person addicted to drugs especially if he is someone very special to you.

When Is It Necessary For An Intervention

An intervention is the process of getting an individual who is abusing drugs or alcohol and who is unwilling to attend treatment, to attend treatment. The family and loved ones of the addict usually hire a professional to assist them in obtaining the addict’s agreement to enter a drug rehab.

An interventionist will normally meet with the family and loved ones of the addict before doing the actual intervention. Although every interventionist’s method varies, the general template is the same:

-Utilize the family and loved ones’ personal communications to impinge on the addict that their habits will no longer be tolerated.
-Whatever privileges are currently given to the addict should be taken away (room and board, car privileges, etc.) until sobriety is achieved. The purpose of this is to stop enabling the individual to continue using and living a relatively “normal” life. The interventionist will guide the family in this process as it may not be easy.

A good interventionist should be found where it seems obvious that the addict or alcoholic will not accept help in a reasonable amount of time. Residential drug rehabs are most effective when bringing a person after an intervention.
