Methadone Addiction Treatment
Heroin addiction is one of the hardest addictions to overcome. Heroin is so physically addicting that the reason they don’t enter a residential drug rehab is that they are scared of the painful withdraw symptoms. Fever, dehydration, diarrhea, insomnia, depression, anxiety, cramping, and body aches are what an addicted individual experiences when coming off of heroin. I know that some of you have experienced these forms of uncomfort before but you have to understand how extreme these are for a heroin addict. Unfortunately people are profiting off of peoples weaknesses. What I mean by that is various medical practices and pharmaceutical companies are making millions of dollars to replace heroin for another drug which is just as addicting.
What I am talking about is something called Methadone. Methadone is a drug produced by a pharmaceutical company that was created to replace heroin. The unfortunate thing for Methadone victims is they first do not offer effective heroin treatment and were told that Methadone was not addicting. Once again we were lied to by the producer of methadone and now thousands of people find themselves severely addicted. The worst thing about methadone is it is actually more addicting than heroin. Most drug rehabs won’t even touch a person on methadone until they have been detoxed first.
A person who is on methadone will find it hard to locate a medical detox which can service him. Most hospitals will turn a person away who is on a high dosage of methadone because of the risk of seizure. Fortunately some private medical detox’s are equip both medically and nutritionally to effectively detox a person off of methadone.

This article is just filled with misconceptions, untruths, and fear mongering that could cost the lives of the individuals they are attempting to frighten away from MMT.
Methadone is NOT “more addicting” than heroin. A drug’s addictive potential is not measured by how long it takes to withdraw from it safely, which seems to be the sole definition of “addictiveness” in this article. It is measured by the intensity of the “rush”, or euphoria, the person feels when they use it–the reinforcing effects. Users of heroin and other short acting opiates experience an intense high, which quickly fades, leaving them wanting more. Methadone, on the other hand, is a very long acting opiate and does not readily cross the blood brain barrier–something that must happen swiftly for a high to be produced. The effects are much more gradual and less intense–and stabilized methadone patients feel nothing at all from their dose. If methadone were “more addicting” than heroin, then when patients withdraw from methadone treatment and go back out and relapse, why do they almost always relapse on heroin or another short acting opiate instead of relapsing on that “more addicting” drug, methadone?
In addition, addiction and dependence are two very different things. Dependence simply means that the patient will experience withdrawals if the drug is abruptly removed–something that is true of anyone who takes an opioid for more than a couple of weeks. Addiction, however, also involves a series of behavioral components such as increasing the dose without permission, trying to obtain extra medication, continued use despite negative consequences, lying, manipulating, doctor shopping, etc. Stable methadone patients do not display these symptoms and cannot be said to be “addicted”, but are “dependent”.

Addiction is a very serious topic. There are a lot of programs that claim to help treat addiction. if that is true and they truly work than why is their success rate only between 1-10%. I found a
rehab that has a success rate of over 70% and the reason being is that they handle not only the mental and emotional parts of the addiction but they also deal with the biological and
physical aspects of the addiction.

Methadone was never made to replace heroin. It was developed to find a pain medication that was not as addicting as others, such as morphine. As a drug methadone has a low potential for addiction.
It was originally developed in 1937 by Max BockmÜhl and Gustav Ehrhart who worked for I.G. Farbenindustrie in Hoechst-Am-Main, Germany. They were searching for an analgesic that would be easier to use during surgery and also have low addiction potential. They called their new synthetic substance whose structure had no relation to morphone or the opioid alkaloids, Hoechst 10820 or polamidon. On September 11, 1941 BockmÜhl and Ehrhart filed an application for a patent. I.G. Farbenindustrie also developed 2 other opiates you are probably familiar with: darvon and Demerol.
During the war BockmÜhl and Ehrhart actually put polamidon on the back shelf and it was not until the end of the war that the substance was discovered by the Americans. Hoechst-Am-Main came under American contol and when the 3 substances were discovered and realized to be opiates or pain medications they were sent off to the Public Health Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. Here it was found that the substance now called methadone was far superior to taper persons with opiate dependencies. Unfortunately the long acting properties that make it an excellent medication to treat addiction and chronic pain would not be discovered for another twenty years for addiction and fourty years for chronic pain control.
Individuals entering methadone programs or opiate treatment programs (OTPs) are not told that methadone does not cause dependence. To the contrary OTPs are highly regulated and the intake process includes addiction history, physical, psychological and social evaluations along with the patient signing a number of forms that state they realize that methadone is a narcotic that must be kept safe and taken as prescribed. Patients during the first 90 days of treatment must go daily until their dose is stabilized at a therapeutic level.
Opiate addiction is a medical condition that involves genetics, biology and numerous social factors. Treatment at OTPs are required to address these factors and to normalize physiology so the patient can lead a normal life — at least as much as normal because patients are supervised more than persons on parole or probation — and these patients have entered treatment voluntarily.
One of the most vicious things that can be done is to spead untruths and blatant lies as methadone addiction treatment. Evidentally they do not even have the courage to leave their name and I suspect that this is someone promoting “their” treatment. When one has to promote ones treatment with lies then their is only one conclusion — it does not work.
